AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 4, 2003
Holt, Rinehart and Winston announced today that Quantum Artificial Intelligence Tutors -- online tutors for the Holt Chemistry, Holt Modern Chemistry, and Holt Science Spectrum titles -- are now available for students who need additional individualized help with science concepts being taught in class.
The Quantum Tutors provide teachers with an on-demand, web-based educational resource for students who need a personal tutor to coach them through difficult science concepts. The Tutors are accessible online, can be used in class, in the computer lab or at home, and give hints and step-by-step instructions, enabling students to practice at their own pace and on problems of their own choice, not just a limited database of pre-selected problems. There are six Tutors addressing complex science topics: elements, ionic compound formulas, mathematics of chemical formulas, measurement, equation balancing and oxidation numbers.
"With the addition of the Quantum Tutors to our catalog, Holt now offers educators the best artificial intelligence tutor for science on the market today," said Judy Fowler, Holt president. "I am pleased with how well the Tutors complement our chemistry and physical science products."
"Holt is the first textbook publishing company to utilize AI technology for chemistry and physical science," stated Rebecca Renshaw, executive vice president and spokesperson for Quantum. "For the first time ever, students, teachers and schools will have a truly intelligent Tutor embedded in the highest-quality online textbooks."
"Our dialogue-driven technology takes Holt's online learning to a level never available before," said Dr. Benny Johnson, president and CEO of Quantum and co-developer of the company's patented and patent-pending AI technologies.
Quantum Tutors go beyond simply offering a correct answer; they help students understand why an answer is correct or incorrect. To use a Tutor, students enter their work just as they would on paper and the Tutor interprets their work and coaches them through the problem-solving process, similar to a human tutor. Quantum Tutors provide individualized hints, guidance, and advice throughout the solution, based on the student's own work, ensuring a conceptually balanced and more meaningful understanding of the subject. Additionally, the Tutors follow student progress, presenting increasingly more challenging problem-solving scenarios as students become more successful at a particular topic.
Holt continues to acquire and develop new technology resources to enhance its portfolio of primary and supplementary teaching materials. For the 2002-03 school year, Holt has launched online textbook series in language arts, social studies, science and mathematics; published a new Middle School Mathematics series; released Holt Online Essay Scoring and Holt Online Assessment; integrated Quantum Artificial Intelligence Tutors into its online science series; secured exclusive distribution rights to the NSF-funded Mathematics in Context(R) curriculum; and revamped the supporting websites for its language arts, world languages, science, social studies and mathematics curricula.
